my first dog book May 12, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
For me this book was very helpful..about 5 or so months ago our family came accross a lost puppy so we tried to find her owners but couldnt...I knew we couldnt just give her up so we addopted her and I set myself out to raise her right. It was hard looking for a good book because I've never owned a dog and i dont know the basics...but after looking long and hard I decided I'd go with this...this book is truely helpfull the book doesnt just show you how to train your dog but how to raise her from the roots like potty training and dicipline. To me its not just a trick book its a helpful tool in you and your dogs life.
Certainly worth the read April 26, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this book to train my two year old Jack Russell. The author uses repeated training methods that are easy understand and most were simple enough for my dog to learn when I would execute them properly. Since my dog is very trainable by nature most of the tricks were worth the effort. The book offers easy to very difficult tricks which is helpful for the novice dog handler. While reading toward the end of the book I began to feel inadequate since I knew my dog wouldn't ever begin to work through the show stopping tricks that might be appropriate for a circus act. All in all I recommend buying this book if you'd like a handbook type reference to train you dog in a humane manner.
Tricks and treats March 14, 2007 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
Although the title accentuates tricks, this is a very good introduction to positive reinforcement dog training. The "ten keys to training success" in the first chapter are the ten commandments of basic dog obedience training. The first four chapters deal with the essentials of preparing yourself and your dog for training, the whys and wherefores of dog training, and the philosophy of treats and fun that make training a pleasure for both handler and dog. The fifth chapter deals with the basics that every dog needs to know before trick training. Then the fun really begins in the chapters about the tricks themselves with clear instructions on how to perform them. The last two chapters talk about other activities that dogs enjoy. This is not just a trick training book. It is an excellent overall dog training book, clearly written, easy to read, light hearted and fun. I recommend it to anyone who really wants to enjoy his or her dogs and help them be great, well-behaved companions.
A great way to start January 12, 2007 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
If you watch "The Dog Whisperer" you already know the importance of walking your dog regularly, and being pack leader. But if you already have that down, why not learn some tricks? The author assumes that you are not an idiot, but she also assumes that you are not a professional trainer, and therefore, gently takes you through some very practical and adorable tricks. This is a well written book, with ample illustration.
So far, my wife has our Coton De Tulear "waving" at strangers (can you think of anything more endearing?), Jumping up to the easy chair to "watch the New York Rangers", rolling over for a treat, and hiding beneath the covers. He is adorable and she has had fun working with this book. Many thanks to the author for a well put together manual that is fun to read.
