The Dog Lover's Companion To California March 18, 2006 The book is wonderful. I really like how the author speaks about the best of the best places to take your dog. She did a wonderful job letting the readers know in advance the prices to bring the dog, as well as, discounts the vendor may offer.
she really loves and respects dogs March 8, 2006 Who else would write such a dog-centered travel guide! And on far flung counties too. Guide is good for residents and travelers alike. My only gripe is the indexing and the titles and subtitles: I find the book hard to navigate because of the minimal graphic design. Once you put post it notes on the sections that are important to you, then it's fine.
The best dog guide ever! October 15, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of this book, which has been my dog's favorite for years. I've bought other guides but totally pale compared to the Dog Lover's Companion to California! This is the best edition yet with what seems like even more hotels and parks. I don't know how they fit everything except that it's now 1003 pages!
One of my favorite things about the book is that it has great information with very funny personal perspectives by the author and her dog. The insights are those you'd get nowhere else. I've never gone wrong with this book, which has everything for people who want to truly vacation with their best furry friends. There are websites and other books, believe me we've used them all, but nothing comes close to comparing to this book.
Chelsea (our golden retriever) my husband and I have used this great book for all our California vacations for years. Since we bought this edition a few months ago at a sweet bookstore in San Diego, here are some of the vacations we've taken together.
*We stayed at a beautiful hotel in Santa Barbara, the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort, where we also went to a dog friendly beach, and a dog bakery!
*We've explored five San Diego Dog Parks, and enjoyed a great meal and a gondola ride with our dog in Coronado!
* We hiked in the Santa Monica Mountains, I can't remember which part, but it was near Malibu with beautiful views. After we went to this great dog friendly cafe I think called Malibu Kitchen and it was the perfect ending to our day. We got the big meatloaf sandwich the book mentioned and Chelsea was very happy when we "accidentally" dropped a piece.
*We visited friends in Napa wine region who are allergic to dogs, so we stayed at a beatiful victorian inn and had dinners at this fabulous restaurant called Tra Vigne. We went to several of the dog friendly wineries the book recommends too.
We've also toured around our local area around Orange County and discovered many fun new dog parks and restaurants to take Chelsea thanks to this book.
I heard there's now a Dog Lover's Companion to Los Angeles and went online to check and am thrilled to see the same author is the author of this! I've been wanting this for a long time.
I've never written a review before or even gone to Amazon, but i'm so grateful for how much this book has done for our little family. Its not just a guide, it's kind of like a friend you can seek out any time you want "the inside scoop" as they say.
good book - lots of material - would make a better website. September 21, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I found the book to be a little thin - considering how thick it is - on material. Maybe it's the nature of things but I think it should include kennels in the area that youre traveling to as well. sometimes it's not always possible to have your dog *everywhere* you go (snowboarding for instance) but to be able to kennel them at a preffered location would be handy. I spend hours looking up this information online from various sources as is.
Awesome August 9, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Bought it when I first moved to California, and it has remained my steady travel bible since. Always well-researched, and each new edition is thoroughly updated. Even has little notes about how things are changing at the time of printing, so you know to make sure and call ahead.
As more dog-friendly guides have recently come out, I tend to use The Dog Lover's Companion and supplement its information with other guides. I have found this one to be by far the most inclusive and thorough as far as dog parks and beaches go - that is its specialty. It's getting better and better with listing places to eat and stay, but other guides have much longer lists.
While more sparing, however, when it does list places to eat and stay, The Dog Lover's Companion still tends to be more accurate (and thorough) in its information: it lists prices, contact info/addresses, and great annecdotes. The guide also lists other "Diversions" (like a water taxi cruise, skiing, a carriage ride, a spa, and a full-moon walk... all with your dog, of course).
I sound like an ad, but seriously, if I could only have one dog-friendly guide, this would be the one, hands down. It has been around since 1993, so it continues to build and update - each new edition is better than the last. At around 1,000 pages, it's also the biggest and longest guide...!
