This is a very helpful puppy training book. It is much better than others which emphasis the negative too much. I have had other dogs, read lots, and like the clicker training approach.
A good choice March 9, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are so many dog training books out there -- it is refreshing to find one with a really positive approach. It reminds me of another favorite, "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne. Combining animal training with philosophy and literary criticism, "Adam's Task" offers excellent insight into how animals communicate and respond to humans. The Atlantic Monthly called it "A fascinating and often surprising discussion of animal-human encounters." If you are an animal trainer-- or even just an animal lover-- it's definitely worth checking out.
Dog Training Help January 9, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The book turned out better than my expectation. I had just finished a PetSmart Dog Obedience class and I wanted to get a book to help me continue with my dog's training now that the class was over. I asked the instructor what book she recommended. She recommend Pat Miller's book because it was the basis of the training we learned in class. It has been excellent. It is easy to read and been exactly what I wanted. New commands are presented in short easy to understand sections and because it uses the same technigues (positive reenforcement) learned in class, my dachshund is learning them quickly. I highly recommend this book.
Positively Pat Miller... January 5, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is THE book that led me into the fascinating world of positive reinforcement dog training. This book makes an easy and interesting read, especially if you have been searching for fun, safe, effective, dog- and family-friendly methods of dog training. Pat uses well-researched and proven dog training methods that are gentle and fun for both owners and their dogs.
This book is well-organized into clear and concise chapters, with a comprehensive and structured 6-week training program that applies the fundamentals of positive training for dogs. This book covers simple basic obedience to progressively more difficult commands and behavior modification (through desensitization) based on the principles of fun and positive training methods that teach and reinforce good/desirable behaviors. With these methods, the dog learns to literally THINK and produce the desired behaviors, in anticipation of a reward! What's more, Pat shows us that positive reinforcement training builds a fun, lasting and trusting relationship between you and your dog.
Pat is ever so positive in her approach and I am really pleased that her efforts in promoting fun and rewarding dog training methods have been echoed around the world. Her book is a hot favorite amongst dog trainers all over the world. I am POSITIVE that every positive reinforcement dog trainer on earth recognises Pat Miller's wonderful work. I know this, because I traveled 8 hours by flight just to meet her in person and participate in a 3-day 'Positively Pat Miller' dog training conference in Sydney, Australia!
Forget those choke chains and leash jerks, stash away the pinch collars...positive reinforcement training is here to stay! It's alot easier, and fun, to learn to do stuff that keeps rewarding. So STAY POSITIVE, TRAIN POSITIVE! I recommend this book to all dog owners who love and cherish their dogs.
Clear and to the point January 3, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the best dog training book I have read, by far. Pat Miller writes in a way that allows you to know exactly what to do, when to do it, and why you are doing it.
More enjoyment and better results is what I got from this excellent book.
