This book left me cold. It was not primarily about the dogs--not much was done about them at all other than cashing in on a catchy title. In particular, I was bothered by the many mistakes of grammar and usage made by someone who is a teacher of writing.
A small gem, expertly cut January 30, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
In her memoir of her life after the traumatic brain injury to her husband, Rich, Abigail Thomas gives us all something to live for. Hope can be not just for the future, but also for the present. Thomas's descriptions of her husband, her dogs, her house, even her socks, show us how to knit a pattern of courage when faced with life's vicissitudes. This is a small book, easily read in one sitting, but one that you will want to read again and again.
Decent tale of a life in the midst of change January 23, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Abigail Thomas wrote a decent enough account of her life after her husband's tragic brain injury but she lacked the ability to really draw you in. She did however artfully describe her transformation from a partner into a single woman who discovers more abilities than she knew she was capable of. This alone is worth the price of the book. One can't help feeling the writer's frustration and we do get to see devotion at it's best. Being an animal lover who has had many dogs come and go in her life, I would have loved a little more dialog about the book's namesakes. All in all, a good book for a lazy afternoon when not too much depth is needed.
Brave soul! January 18, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book was well written, moving, funny at times, and the author is so courageous. She touched my woman's heart. I often thought how I would have reacted in her circumstances. I love animals, especially cats, but the comfort she received by the companionship of her three dogs was understandable. I thank her for sharing her experience. I believe it has helped more people than she realizes who are in the same, or similar circumstances.
It was just "ok" January 17, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
While I cared about the author and her story, it didn't go deep enough into anything. Not much about dogs, her husbands injury, etc. I enjoyed the part on "coincidences" (I don't want to spoil it for anyone) but I wish it would have gone into it more. In to everything more, really. I fell asleep reading this everytime I tried to read it.
Stephen King's rave was misleading and I wonder if he's read, "The Glass Castle" -- that is by far the best memoir I have ever read.
