5 out of 5 stars Great Magazine   June 10, 2008

Cat Fancy is a great magazine. So far I've received two issues, and look forward to more. The issues I received thus far have had interesting topics discussed. Topics such as Hope for Feral Cats, The Encroachment of Tiger Habitats, Alternative Medicine, Natural Diets, The No-Kill Shelter Quest, etc. The magazine also has a Q and A section where Vets answer many questions and concerns owners/parents have about their cats. There is also an advice column, stories about rescued cats, a breed profile, a free poster in each magazine, etc. The only thing I didn't care for was the Cat Breeder Directory, in the back of each magazine, that took up several pages (though I'm sure others may like this feature). Personally I think adopting a shelter animal is the way to go. Not only do you gain a new family member, but you save a life while doing so.

4 out of 5 stars Probably worth the money -- try it for a year first   May 26, 2008
The best thing about this magazine is that the articles are pretty much about something that you didn't already know about cat wellness. It's sort of like a "Consumers' Report" for cat people. In any event, the articles are well-written and, from my view, great advice on caring for your feline friends.

I have 11 cats (10 inside and one outside, plus two mutts) and when I toss in the cost of this magazine against all the costs of owning these animals, vet bills, special food, insulin for two of them, etc., the minor financial burden of the magazine is insignificant. So, for me at least, it's worth it.

Yes there's quite a bit of advertising but the worst point is all those subscription cards that fall out all over the place where they're terrified that you won't re-subscribe. There's at least 6 per issue!

The fact is, cat people who are responsible enough to subscribe to a magazine in an effort to care for their cat(s) are also responsible enough to re-subscribe if we feel that it's a good product -- we don't need to be beat over the head with "noxious reminders"! Maybe this technique works for magazines of different genres, but cat lovers sure can do without this nusiance.

I'd try it for one year and if you find that your not reading it, then don't re-up. For my wife and I, it's worth the money, even though it is a little pricey.

4 out of 5 stars Cat Fancy Mag   May 1, 2008

i won both the dog and cat Fancy Mags. For some reason I tend to like the Dog one better. But I do look forward to both in my mailbox so I am going to keep them.

2 out of 5 stars I didn't fancy it   March 16, 2008

I love cats, but this magazine wasn't for me. First, the magazine itself is quite short, less than 100 pages. Nearly half of it is devoted to advertising and a breeder directory, leaving about 50 pages of substantive material. Even Amazon's reduced rate is rather expensive for what you get. The $54 cover price for 12 issues is outrageous.

I had mixed feelings about the 50 or so pages that were worth reading. Occasionally I found something that was useful to me in caring for my cat. But a lot of times the articles were too brief and superficial and did not go into enough depth to be of much help. I agree with the review that mentions the article that lists different types of litter without providing any pros and cons. I remember that article and was also frustrated by it.

The other thing that bothered me about this magazine was the emphasis on purebred cats. Animal shelters across the country are overflowing with wonderful cats who need homes, and many are euthanized due to lack of space. It really bothers me that this magazine does very little to promote adoption of shelter cats, while encouraging the purchase of purebred cats from breeders. I'm honestly surprised at the focus on purebreds in a cat magazine. I've known several people who purchased a dog from a breeder, but none of the cat owners I know have ever purchased a cat from a breeder. If you happen to be one of those who prefers purebred cats, you will probably love all of the material devoted to them. If you don't own a purebred, you might feel a bit left out.

Overall, I think this magazine will appeal to some cat owners but not everyone. For this reason I would recommend purchasing a copy from the newsstand before committing to an annual subscription.

I think it's silly to ask a cat lover if they like a magazine about cats. The magazine is full of wonderful pictures of cats, with even a sexy centerfold suitable for framing.
The articles are of current interest, to the point, and brief enough to hold the reader.
The advertizements are useful and I study every one.
If you love cats you need this magazine.
