This is the mutts nuts! December 2, 2002 2 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was drawn to this publication by the haunting image of Shep (from Blue Peter) calling me to read more. I dunno how close John Leslie and Shep were, but you can read a very probing(!) interview, which examines the closeness of the relationship and how such a lovely fluffy animal can become part of the family, like an aunt or uncle.
For dog professionals or the dog-obsessed November 18, 2002 88 out of 89 found this review helpful
(ORIGINAL REVIEW November 18, 2002 - update below) I haven't subscribed in a few years, but I've picked up a few off the newsstands. I purchase Dog Fancy, and it's not a bad magazine, but of the two, its more your "Entertainment Tonight," while Dog World is more like "60 Minutes." Neither is necessarily better than the other, it just depends on what you want. While I was managing a vet clinic and doing some dog training, I preferred Dog World. In my opinion it delved more deeply into issues and wasn't afraid to ruffle some feathers (ie when the AKC "dog-napped" the Australian Shepherd, and when dog breed legislation started to get out of control). It was a great reference tool to find serious breeders, trainers, and pet supplies, and so more heavy on the advertisements, but as someone who counseled others in all aspects of dog care, I actually appreciated this feature of Dog World. When I left the "bizz," I just wanted to stay up on issues in a not-so-serious presentation, and Dog Fancy was my magazine of choice.
I find both magazines' coverage of issues fair and balanced most of the time. What I tend to find with other lesser known magazines is they slant toward the methods, opinions, and personality of one or two people, or one political (for lack of a better word) camp. For instance, one magazine, heavily AKC focused, had nothing good to say about Schutzhund, and I found the feeling was reciprocated by the Schutzhund magazine editors. You'll also find biased articles in Dog Fancy and Dog World, but they're balanced by other biased articles, so you can actually evaluate the differing opinions, instead of having an opinion imposed upon you.
I'd recommend Dog World if you're a professional breeder, kennel operator, trainer, or are otherwise focusing on a career with dogs. If you're a dog owner who just wants to stay "in the know," get Dog Fancy. If you're consumed, pre-occupied, eat, sleep, and drink dog information, get them both and you'll be very happy.
UPDATE 2/2005 - I now subscribe to Dog World & find that it has been "dumb-downed." The articles are not nearly as in-depth as they used to be, and a lot of information they give can be found on any decent website. Their "breed of the month" article--brief, bland, bare. The topics may be more geared for professionals, but what I used to like about this particular magazine is gone -- the "wealth" of information about each main topic. Still, the articles are now short enough you don't have to worry about spending too much time reading. I guess some people prefer the shortened format -- I can't help feeling a little cheated. If I could adjust the stars, my rating would go from a 5 to a 3--it's an average dog magazine now.

More about dogs, please! February 27, 2002 21 out of 31 found this review helpful
It's really a thick magazine full of advertisements. Some of the ads make me feel a bit ill (especially the ones about how vicious a certain guard dog is that a breeder is selling - just nasty). I would be more interested in good stories, cameos on individual dogs and their trainer, more dog sports and less of the buying, breed profile and confirmation stuff. Very purebred-centric. Will not be renewing. Still haven't found a dog magazine that is more general interest, more about having fun with dogs and less snotty about 'what kind' the dog is.
