5 out of 5 stars Excellent Horse Info   April 10, 2007

We love this magazine and sent it as a gift subsciption to a friend. It has varied information on horse health, grooming, all styles of riding, etc. It is very good for diverse information - it doesn't focus just on one aspect of horsemanship (ie western riding only) - so if you need a good magazine for general subjects this is definitely a good one to choose.

3 out of 5 stars Horse Illustrated   February 20, 2007

I started reading Horse Illustrated (HI) when I was a horse-crazy kid and I loved it. But now that I'm an adult and have gotten more serious with my riding, HI doesn't cut it anymore. It caters to both western and English riders and provides general horse care information. That means if you're looking for in-depth riding articles, you'll want to try discipline specific magazines like Practical Horseman, Dressage Today, or Horse & Rider instead.
My biggest gripe with HI is that none of the articles stick with you. Nearly every topic the magazine covers can be found in any horse care book. Also, the magazine is rather thin with LOTS of ads and breeder listings in the back.

The bottom line: If you love horses and just want a general horsey mag, you'll like HI. If you want to read something that goes more in-depth, you might want to look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Owning and Caring for Horses   October 6, 2006

Horse Illustrated is a monthly magazine designed to appeal mostly to horse owners and to those who have an avid interest in horseback riding, horse care and maintenance, and other related subjects. This publication covers a wide range of topics like care for horses, selecting a breed, finding the best boarding, horse health care, and more. The magazine offers a large number of topics each month that cover the essentials of equine care and most of these are pretty good in covering the basics necessities to keep horses looking and feeling their best. These articles, while not always very in- depth, are generally good and they make the magazine worth reading for the horse owner.

One fact about Horse Illustrated that might disappoint some readers is that it doesn't include much on the sport of horse racing. When I first discovered this magazine, I assumed that horse racing would be one of the main sections of coverage each month. But that isn't the way things are done at Horse Illustrated. The subtitle of this magazine is "The Magazine for Responsible Horse Owners". I think this subtitle sums up the main focus of this magazine. It is intended as a publication for people who want to know how to take better care of their horses and how to ensure they live to a ripe old age. There is some coverage of racing events, but Horse Illustrated keeps its focus on the individual person and his/her horse.

Every magazine has its share of departments and Horse Illustrated is no different. But what is surprising is that each issue contains about eight featured articles. Horse Illustrated doesn't contain many pages to begin with so there is precious little space for monthly features. Still, Horse Illustrated manages to squeeze them in. This is great for people who prefer to read the longer articles each month and tend to shy away from the monotony of most magazines' departments. Eight featured articles are more than most other magazines of comparable length.

Overall, Horse Illustrated is a good magazine for horse owners and others who want to learn a few things about horses and the best ways to care for them. Some people will find this magazine a little boring because it discusses a topic that only a few enjoy and it presents material that doesn't have much relevance outside of the world of horses. Others who are more experienced will find this magazine too basic. But is still a worthwhile read with a low price. It is a magazine intended for horse enthusiasts and it makes a good gift choice for the horse lover in any family.

3 out of 5 stars Okay magazine   September 1, 2006

I read some of the other reviews and was very intruiged. Yes, the photography is wonderful. But... if you are an amateur horseback rider, getting Horse Illustrated's book, Caring for Your Horse, or English Riding, or Buying a Horse, etc. would be a lot smarter than ordering this magazine. In a year's subscription, I found two really helpful articles. Some would start out great... and then just meander around and not give much info. There is also a lot more about horse care in here, and not much about riding/training. You could get a book for the price of this magazine and learn tons more.

4 out of 5 stars Great Magazine for Horse Owners   September 23, 2005

Horse Illustrated is the largest equine publication in America and it serves a great audience--the novice horse owner. It is both entertaining and informative. And it is written for an adult audience, not for "younger riders" as some are saying. It's sister publication, "Young Rider" IS. To the person who wrote in about not having any depth: well, Equus on average has only four features per issue! And you know what one of them was this month? An indepth article on photographs of kids on ponies! Like that's useful? And Horse Journal is boring--unless you want to read pedantic article after article on 87 saddle pads or 55 liniments.
Horse Illustrated has more pages than any of these magazines making it a better value. And it's articles are the same lenght and go into the same depth as any of the other magazines out there.
I've been reading it for more than 10 years and I think it's great.
For Monika who wrote in about the article on "Gypsy Vanner Horses," perhaps you should go back and re-read the article. It was about Gypsy bred horses, and talked about all kinds of cobs and horses, even the Drum horse. People are interested in all kinds of horses, even the ones that you don't approve of.
If you are into rodeo, this isn't the magazine for you. If you are an upper level rider, it's not for you either.
