1 out of 5 stars cover shot of last issue   September 30, 2005

I TRASHED THE ISSUE WHEN I SAW THE SHOT OF TRASHY PARIS HILTON. THERE IS ENOUGH NUDITY ALREADY IN YOUR PUBLICATION AND SEEING THAT SAD PIECE OF WORK (HER) ON THE COVER JUST TURNED ME OFF COMPLETELY. SORRY YOU THOUGHT HER 'COVER WORTHY'. PROBABLY MISSED SOME FINE ARTICLES. SINCERELY: DEANE EVERETT

1 out of 5 stars Magazine is great Amazon Supscription Service is Terrible!   September 14, 2005

I love Vanity Fair. It's the only magazine I read and is the only one I would LIKE to have a subscription to.

That being said, I purchased a one year subscription from Amazon in January 2005. I received the first couple of magazines just fine, but when I moved to another residence in May 2005 and called to change my address, Synapse (the company that handles Amazon subscriptions to Vanity Fair) told me it could take up to 10 weeks to get my next issue. When I asked if my subscription would be penalized for those months I did not receive a magainze, I was told no. After 10 weeks, and another phone call to Synapse to check on the status of my magazine, I received an issue for that month. One issue. And not another one since.

On the magazine that DID make it to my new house I noticed that they had my name misspelled (even after I verified all of that information when I called to change my address) and this explains why the two times I called to check on my subscription they could never look up my order by my last name.

After that month, July, I have never received another issue. I called 2 days ago to check on this and my name was still misspelled in their computer system. When I asked why I wasn't receiving the magazine the customer service rep told me she didn't know and she would turn over the concern to another rep who would call me back in 1-5 business days. When I asked her if I was going to be penalized for not receiving these magazines (when my subscription would come due in January by their calaculations, when I should be getting 4-5 months of extra magazines for the time it took them to change my address and the missed issues this summer) she told me she didn't know.

So if you are thinking about subscribing go to the Vanity Fair website directly or just buy it at a store. It's not worth the time or effort. 10 weeks, 1-5 business days, life is too short.

Dear Amazon Customer Service: You really need to reevaluate the way you handle magazine subscriptions and get some new policies. If the united states post office can change your address in a week and start forwarding your mail....then I am sure you are capable too. You are generally pretty resourcful, so maybe you can step it up around here, ok?

I am a loyal Amazon customer, and even a former B&N bookseller, but I have to say this experience has left a terrible taste in my mouth.

Run, don't walk, away from Amazon magazine subcriptions.

5 out of 5 stars My Fave Mag by a Mile!   August 23, 2005

Why do I love Vanity Fair? It has such a great mix of all the things I want to read. Political issues, true crime articles, great Hollywood interviews, wonderful pictures and news items that are up to the minute. Recently my husband and I traveled to Maine and I read almost the entire thing to him while we were in the car. Enough stuff for both of us to love. I pass this on to my whole family and they can't wait. Dominic Dunn's Diary is a must-read as well. I always feel like I'm stepping into the "in crowd" when I read it's pages!

1 out of 5 stars Beware Vanity Fair Subscription Renewal SCAM   August 3, 2005
18 out of 27 found this review helpful

I enjoyed Vanity Fair magazine for several years but I chose to not renew it in January 2005. They sent the usual renewal notices and I tossed them out, and the magazine stopped coming.

Now in July 2005 I got a harassing letter from "National Credit Audit Corporation" threatening me if I don't pay the $15 account. I did not renew this and I don't owe it, but the tone of the letter is serious.

With some research on the Net I see that Vanity Fair is using an unreputable firm to harass people into renewing.

Anyhow this is finally getting picked up by the mainstream media such as the San Francisco Chronicle, which reported that VF's sister publication, WIRED Magazine, is doing the same thing (they are both Conde Naste publications).

NOTE this is NOT related to Amazon.com, and I am not saying if you subscribe via Amazon that this will happen. It seems to be part of a certain low-rate offer that contained certain language about "auto-renewal" that nobody could possibly read, it's so small. I am writing a letter to the magazine, the credit agency, and the attorneys general of New York and Florida.

The magazine is great, the journalism is top rate. But just try to stop your subscription, you might face the same dunning.

4 out of 5 stars A great mix of Entertainment, Fashion, and Society..and a great deal   June 29, 2005

Vanity Fair has undergone a major transformation in the last several years from magazine geared towards women to a monthly that appeals to a much broader audience. The writing has gotten consistently better as well, though the occasional article will be little more than fluff. Photography is always lush, with the art world's top talent contributing beautiful done shots of major stars. Issues like Young Hollywood, or New Music Stars are fantastic, and every issue is something fresh and interesting.

In any given month we get a star showcase on the cover. Recent months have seen Lindsay Lohan, Sandra Bullock, and Hilary Swank. Interviews with these stars are fascinating because they invariably reveal more than they expect to. A recent interview with Sheryl Crow revealed the best of Vanity Fair, an intelligent, emotional, and honest interview that reveals a lot about Sheryl. The acccompanying photography is simply gorgeous. Every month has a rambling diary from the frequently tiresome Dominic Dunne (yes Dom, we get it, you know everyone.), a hard hitting political piece, and a expose on the past of politics, hollywood, or society. The articles are mostly great stuff, but with some clunkers in every issue. Every time I receive an issue, I know there will be articles that will fascinate me. Friends use to claim that Vanity Fair was a girl's magazine. Well, its not just for women anymore.

That being said, don't just order here. Go to their website and to the subscription inserts in the magazine itself, compare the prices, and request that a billing notice be sent to you instead of paying with a credit card. This way when your subscription is up for renewal, you have the opportunity to cancel without your card being charged. Often times sites like this one utilize a third party service that contracts with the various magazines, your payment goes to them and they auto-renew you. I find it easier to do it through the magazine themselves. Saves me the trouble, and invariably, the magazine comes a lot quicker.
