All filler, no meat. December 23, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
While I thought the book would be great, considering the author, it left much to be desired. This more than likely could have just been written as an article in the newspaper, not published as an entire book. The pages were filled with pictures of random dogs, and not much text.
I really kept hoping that the author would elaborate more on her dog, really draw me in, make me miss her dog, and want to have a dog like hers. There was not enough text to do so, and I really can't recommend it, if you are really looking for a meaningful dedication to a loved pet. It really could have done so much more.
Took 15 min. to read entire book December 22, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is an adorable story, but it took about 15 min. to read, cover to cover. Very short and half of the pages are photos. Very overpriced.
As Expected........ December 18, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am an avid devotee of Anna Quindlen's bi-weekly articles on the"last page" of Newsweek Magazine. She is great at getting a lot done with a few words. Good Dog. Stay is no exception And the photos stir in an added ingredient of enjoyment.
Where's the beef? December 17, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
There's so little to this book, it's difficult to offer a review. While Ms. Q's wit and ability to clearly articulate the human condition prevail in her previous work, there's just not enough ink between the covers of "Good Dog. Stay." to say much except "where's the beef"? I was left wondering if Anna wrote of Beau's death as a personal catharsis and mistakenly submitted these notes to her publisher. If this is the case, shame on the publisher (Random House) for not noticing that this ten-minute read would have been best delivered via a magazine article. But then again, given the publication date, it's on the book shelves in time for holiday shoppers to grab for a (grossly overpriced) stocking stuffer. `Tis the season.
Don't waste your time December 14, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Boy am I glad I got this book through the library. Even so, it wasn't worth the cost of gas to go there and back. As other reviews have said, without the photos (which are inexplicably without captions) and double-spacing, the book would have been 20 pages at best. I read it in less than 15 minutes. If the author imparted any life lessons Beau taught her, other than that creatures are born, live, get old and sick, and then die, I sure didn't read them. I can't believe this "book" would ever have seen the light of day were it not for the well-known name of the author. The only good thing I can say is that Beau's owners waited until he was ready to die rather than murdering him as Jon Katz would have done. Is John Grogan the only author capable of writing a readable book about dogs?!
