Great Book!! January 12, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this book for a Christmas present for my daughter. She's a dog-lover and owner of a black Lab mix (my grand-puppy). She loved the book, even though it made her cry!
a good read January 11, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this book. It was a short, but very touching story with lots of animated doggy photos thru-out. I do recommend this to any who care about a four legged creature.
a real disappointment January 3, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
As a huge dog lover who is challenged not to love any story about the love and life of one, I have to say I was really disappointed with this book! All I could think was "shame on them" for publishing this and charging such a price. There was nothing about the story to hold on to and connect with. The end made me cry but only because I was thinking about my dog and what 'that moment' would be like. Shame on them.
Good but too short January 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I enjoy Anna Quindlen and have read several of her books. I picked up this book to read between two horror books, a Stephen King book and a Dean Koontz book, looking for some light reading. Light reading is an understatement. I read this "book" (really, more of an essay) slowly and it still only took me 20 minutes to read the whole thing. There are lots of pictures of adorable dogs, as many pictures, I think, as there are pages of text. Although I enjoyed the pictures, I would have preferred more writing, less pictures. These pictures seemed to be there for filler. The writing itself was okay. I thought it got off to a rough start with Quindlen unable to find what she wanted to say, and the "story" wandered. It was more a bunch of disjointed thoughts. Finally, about 1/2 way through, Quindlen settled down and wrote about her dog Beau and what he gave to her, her family, and how his wonderful outlook on life was something to be appreciated. For that, it is worth reading, just be aware that it won't take you long to get through the book. One final comment, something that really bothered me: Quindlen frequently mentioned how Beau would run loose around their country home, getting lost, or finding neighbors' trash cans to get into, as though this was something all dog owners should allow. I kept wondering about her neighbors and how they must appreciate (not!) the loose dog. Twice she told of how Beau hated horses, and also how he liked to "try to drive a horse from his stretch of the road." Quindlen may think this is cute, but very few horses do and I know somebody who wound up in a hospital because the dog's owner thought it was cute. Please, Ms. Quindlen, be a responsible dog owner and keep your future dogs on leashes!
Very Disappointed January 1, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I received this book for Christmas and I am a HUGE dog lover. I expected so much more from this than what I felt. I too have labs and love them like my own children but I just could never get into this book. The author wrote "over my head" with her big words and her way of "speaking" per say. I just couldn't feel it like I thought I would. It took me about 45 minutes to read and I kept waiting for that "something more". I never got it. When I finished, I was actually mad. I was mad that my husband paid full price for this book that didn't do a THING for me. For Christmas I asked for books about labs, such as Marley and Me that makes me cry just thinking about it. I LOVED that book. This cannot even be mentioned on the same page. Sorry. Not worth the money.
