1 out of 5 stars Waste of money   September 21, 2005

I was so disappointed in this book, particulary after reading some of the glowing reviews. I can't believe it cost almost $40 for this paperback! I had to slog through pages and pages of information to find the recipes - and the amounts to make were in a different place in the book. The cat recipes are buried at the back of those for dogs, too - why couldn't he have separated out the info. for cats into a separate chapter!? The recipes are hard to follow (e.g., how much is 10 grains of bone meal? the only bone meal I could find was in a health food store and it's powdered - I have no idea how much to put in each batch). My cats won't touch most of the stuff I've concocted using this book and they still throw up the stuff they will eat (chicken and rice). I can't believe I'm stuck with this book now. What a waste of my hard-earned $$!!

3 out of 5 stars feeding a reluctant eater   September 13, 2005

This book is good for many dogs and cats with particular health problems, but my dog sends picky eaters to a new high. Sadly I found no help for this particular problem.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for Renal Failure in Canines   September 13, 2005

As the old saying goes: "You can't argue with success." My dog was diagnosed with renal disease in September of 2005. He had a BUN of 119, creatinine of 6.0, high phosphorus levels and anemia. My vet told me that getting this book would provide my dog with the best chance of getting better. After two weeks of following this diet his BUN was 68--not normal, but a whole lot better. His creatinine was almost normal and his phosphorus is within normal range and his anemia is gone. He's energetic and hungry now, while he was lying around, not eating, and vomiting daily before. I was confused by the tapioca and chicken fat ingredients at first, but once I figured that out it's been wonderful. I've told everyone I know with pets about this great book. A friend with cats who had kidney stones swore by it years ago but I didn't think I "needed it" because my dogs were healthy. It's these diets from now on for them!

UPDATE March, 2006: It has now been six months on the home cooked meals and his BUN dropped to 52 after 3 months and is now 42. Seeing the success of this diet has me ready to feed my other dog the home-cooked diet for healthy dogs.

5 out of 5 stars The best pet food book out there!   August 29, 2005

I heartily recommend this book to anyone wanting to prepare their dog or cat's diet at home, avoiding the not so pleasant ingredients of kibble.

The recipes are cooked, which is what I prefer. Raw does not agree with my dogs, no matter how "natural" of an idea it is. You have to listen to your dog's body. Diarrhea is NOT "detox" it's a symptom of intolerance.

A previous review complained that there is no addition of fruits or vegetables, citing a quote about how beneficial these foods are. If he were to read before the recipes begin, Strombeck recommends adding up to one half cup cooked veggies and fruit to each recipe. I do this myself.

I just started my 3 dogs on these recipes and they're doing great. A great book!

4 out of 5 stars On Raw Food   January 4, 2005

I have been feeding my two dogs raw food, the hardcore full carcass and veggies deal, for about a year now. I have seen great improvement in health and energy the whole time, and they look beautiful. Despite these results, however, I have decided that I need to start cooking the meat and removing the bones. I write this because you who believe in the raw food diet might believe someone who has been there - and gotten excellent results - when they say that raw food is NOT A GOOD IDEA. I have recently found a lot of literature on the harm that a raw food diet can do to a dog. Know that even if domestic dogs were built like wolves, which they are not, they should still not be eating a raw meat diet. What raw foodists don't seem to know is that even wolves in the wild are often malnutritioned, infested with harmful parasites, and internally injured from a NATURAL diet, the diet you are trying to replicate. You should also know that there are NO SCIENTIFIC STUDIES that prove that a raw meat diet is better for a dog than cooked meat. I am not advocating commercial dog food, which I know is garbage. I am just saying COOK THE MEAT and find recipes that will provide your dog with the nutrition it needs. For starters, I'd like to refer those raw food feeders to a website called Second Chance Ranch (secondchanceranch.org). It is a good place to start learning about diets and dogs. Remember, you started feeding your dog raw in the first place to make it healthy. Do what is best for your dog and don't be petty about changing your beliefs.
