Splendid! May 19, 2002 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book is less than 40 pages long yet covers areas books many hundreds of pages miss. I don't know how many people I've heard say that their dogs are stubborn because they look away when given a command, or sneaky because they waste time sniffing the ground on walks, or stupid because they sit instead of coming when called. Dog motives are not that complex, and they're so easy to understand when you read this book! Turid Rugaas teaches you to work with your dog instead of unteaching him the valuable language he already knows.
Expert at "reading" dogs December 2, 2001 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
The book and the video of the same title are excellent for anyone who has contact with dogs. Short, easy to read (and watch), her examples are clear and you can practice some of the calming signals and see that they work. She is one of the leaders in the field, internationally known and respected. It should be required reading (and watching) for everyone. Even advanced instructors can benefit by being reminded to teach this.
Calming Signs: Of Dogs and People November 29, 2001 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Turid Rugaas' ON TALKING TERMS WITH DOGS:CALMING SIGNS is essential reading for anyone who wants to communicate with dogs, whether as a pet owner, trainer, or kid with a "dangerous" dog next door. After memorizing it myself, I keep sending copies to friends' children. I think knowing something of dogs' universal language helps us understand people as well. And it keeps the pit bull next door, who is yawning because it's uncomfortable with our staring at it, or wagging its tail because it is worried, more safe from us and from our children.
Calming Signals Work! November 20, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Within minutes of reading a few pages from this book, my relationship with my puppy changed forever. Suddenly, we were communicating with each other and it worked. Three years later, it still works and is part of our everyday life together. This book is simple, to the point, and essential for all dog lovers who want to be able to better understand their dog. The subtle signals are obvious once Rugaas reveals them. I have recommended this book to thousands of owners (personally and through e-mail lists). The feedback is all positive. One owner had tried for years to have her dog cooperate when shown. Using calming signals, her dog was at ease and able to stay in the ring for the first time ever. I can't imagine having a dog without this knowledge.
