A great source for huge variety of breeds around the world! May 17, 2008 I first got a copy of this book in 1993, and it exposed me to so many other types of breeds I never knew existed. I eventually became a rare dog breeder, and attribute my initial exposure to Dogo Argentinos to this book. I'm on my second copy now. The only downside is that some of the breeds described are so rare that they had to provide drawn illustrations of the breed, and that's never as good as the actual pictures of a breed. However, the information for each breed is sufficient enough to provide the key traits of each breed, their overall behavior, and breed history. The book is thick like a compact dictionary, but small so it makes a great reference book. I just wish they published an updated version of this book because it's such a great resource.
The Most Educational Book Ever! December 26, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is extremely educational in so many ways. This is part of the reason as to how I know thousands of different dog breeds that most smart people wouldn't. This book is fabulous!
One of the best! July 17, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read it cover to cover many times! I always use it as a reference to learn something new about dogs. It also helped me to decide which breed of dog I should get (along with some other wonderful books). What an enlightening read! Although it could have provided more information and actual pictures (instead of drawings for some of the breeds), I still give it 5 stars!
Great photos & breed key! October 23, 2000 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
We use this book constantly at our small animal shelter. Good photographs of breeds, and the breed key with each description helps people focus in on breeds they'd like to do further research on, and to drop from their list, the breeds that would not be suitable for their lifestyle. It's great for showing people what kind of personalities are blended together in that adorable mutt they are considering adopting from the shelter. The adoption helpers almost never put this one down while showing the dogs.
The finest example of dog breed books available April 12, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you ever wanted to know about dogs or the history of dog breeds, this is the definitive book that you should own. There is almost every breed of dog ever known and the descriptions will guide you if you are thinking about getting a dog, and if you just love them, it's for you!!
