Older Rescue Dogs Make Great Pets ! November 28, 2007 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Sprite's story is such a good reminder that older dogs -- the forgotten ones in rescue -- can make some of the best, and most rewarding pets you can find. Most old dogs, like the ones with health problems (blind, limping, deaf), generally get put to sleep at shelters because most people look for a "newer," care-free pet.
Most of these older dogs, or handicapped dogs, have never had a decent break in their poor lives and die alone & unloved. However, once you've had one of them you realize what wonderful and fulfilling pets they can be. Most are so surprised & grateful to finally have a warm, dry place with good food and someone to pay attention to them that they'll do anything to make you happy. All you have to do is explain the rules right and they're overjoyed to do it. After raising working dogs for 20 years, then doing dog rescue (all ages, any breed or mix) for another 20 yrs, I know there is nothing as satisfying and rewarding as looking at an old, happy dog that you've given a few happy years ... perhaps the only happy ones they've known.
There are lots of dogs out there like Sprite -- and as close as your local shelter or rescue group (avoid the big national groups that spend their money on advertising instead of dogs). Small local rescue organizations are better, since they usually have all dogs evaluated in foster homes to evaluate their temperament with people, children & other dogs or cats.
The little bit of money and effort you devote to an older dog is the most satisfying investment you'll ever make.
See what Mr. Levin is talking about -- go find yourself a "Sprite."
A Beautifully Told, Touching Story November 28, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
There's a lot of value in this little book. I cried and I laughed through it. It's a beautifully told story about the unconditional love of the author's best friend and the pain of having to end such a wonderful life. There are lessons to be learned here for all pet owners. The book will help you appreciate your pet so much more than you already do. It's an easy, fast read, filled with emotion on almost every page, and makes you feel like you're right there. Worth every cent, buy this book and learn a lot in a short period of time. I bought copies for all the dog owners in my family, and they all loved it! You will, too!

Heartfelt Family Story November 27, 2007 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have to admit I'm not a reader of books for entertainment or hobby but I could not put this one down. It is full of family love and everyday up and down events. This is a beautiful sharing from Mark Levin. Thank you Mark for not only this book but for all that you do.
