Before training your dog, take the time to read this book! November 6, 2000 34 out of 36 found this review helpful
As a dog owner and scientist, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I believe that many can benefit from the information included by this author. By going through the mechanics and function of the brain (most specifically a dog's) , I am better able to interpret my animals' behavior (good and not-good). I found the discussion of the dog's senses intriguing and enlightening. Furthermore, if during training you have ever wondered "why am I not getting through... this is soooo simple" or "why isn't he/she getting this", then I think that you will find an answer in the study of animal behavior. I hope someday to breed and professionally train dogs, and so the information on puppys' physiological and social/psychological development will come in very useful. If anything, I have learned how important early sensory stimulation on animals can be -- basically, how it can lead to a well-adjusted temperment. However -- buyers note: this is NOT a how-to dog train in "twelve easy steps" or in "5 days!" That is OK... it is not meant to be. I believe that dog owners and handlers should read such books as part of the overall training process. In my opinion, the best obedience training involves both the dog AND human learning. If you too believe that, then read this book -- it will give you a great start towards a successful relationship with your dog!
Vets and Docs: Limbic System October 15, 2000 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
At last I understand how my limbic system works. The diagram of the pituitary gland is priceless. You can't even find this on the endocrinologist's website as a general overview of 3 organs: thyroids, adrenalins, sex organs. Together with the info on the BRAIN AND MIND MAGAZINE by Brazilian Neurologists I am finally learning all about me and how I work. Thank goodness, I'm pretty normal. So I think vets and pediatricians should get together because there is an overlap. Indeed, my Galileo and Monique are truly my best friends. Then this would improve the economics of medical science, especially for raising human kids. Sometimes I wonder how vets feel when they visit the pediatrician:)
ok for new dog owners!!! October 14, 2000 6 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book proves a very interesting read. It allows you to find meanings for your dogs behaviour. However, most of the behaviour that is explained in the book is only from the authors point of view. Therefore, this book is very helpful to the new owner of a dog but is not so helpful to those studying in the area of animal behaviour. It provides no other theories from other animal behaviourists and is not useful for research purposes.
The Dogs Mind; Understanding Your Dog's Behavior September 25, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
An outstanding read for any dog owner, both the novice and the seasoned breeder. I would recommend highly to anyone who has an affection for canines.
No New 'Insights' Here August 27, 2000 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you've never have had a dog, or never have read any books about dogs, this book may offer some 'insights' into dog behaviour. However, if you have cared for dogs before, you will most likely find nothing new in this book that observation and experience have not already taught you. The few obvious 'insights' the author makes are repeated time and time again, chapter after chapter, in this book.
