Great ! October 5, 1999 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Wonderfully funny, easy reading and quite informative. Gives an in depth look at every imaginable aspect of the Dane and it's proper care through life's stages. Definitely recommended for Dane owners and anyone considering a Dane.
great information, great pictures September 8, 1999 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
this book had good detailed descriptions of the breed standard, health, temperament, etc. it also had great pictures. i would suggest this book for anyone who wants an entertaining and informative overview of the breed.
not bad, not great March 27, 1999 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book is less a guide specifically for new owners than a general guide to the breed. As a new owner of a 12 week old Great Dane puppy, I was looking for a specific, health and behavior-oriented, "how to deal with the first 6 months" kind of book, and though this book has a little of that, it is more general than I expected. It is, in fact, part of a series of "New Owner's" guides for just about every breed there is. Some of the author's advice also differs from advice in other Great Dane books. It is written in the first-person, in a friendly and personal style, and has lots of color pictures (which is nice). But, in general, it's not nearly as helpful for new owners as the title might lead you to believe.
Answers many questions A new Dane owner faces. March 7, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a great book for someone interested in a Great Dane for a pet, or a new owner of a Dane. The book is straight forward about what to expect of your Dane and how to handle possible problems you may encounter. The book is not filled with technical information thats hard to understand, but written beatifully simple for us new owners to understand. While reading the book you will be thoroughly entertained by the authors personality which shines through in her writing. By the end of the book you will be amazed at how much you will have learned about Danes from such an interesting book. Stacey
A comprehensive guide to Great Dane ownership January 2, 1998 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
We have owned Great Danes for a little over two years and now have four of them. Great Danes are a very special breed, with a sweet, affectionate personality, and great need for interaction with humans. In recent months we joined the Great Dane Mailing List and have learned much more about the breed from the breeders and other owners who contribute to that list regularly. This is how we heard of Jill Swedlow and learned about her book. We wished we had had the book before we bought our first Dane. This book is a clear, concise, and comprehensive introduction to the breed and all the things needed to be successful with them. From history to health care, behavior problems, and techniques for traveling with your dog, this book presents excellent advice. Great Danes are not for everyone! Since they are a giant breed, good behavior and obedience training are a must! Jill Swedlow is a highly respected long-time breeder of Great Danes, and her good sense, experience, and thorough knowledge really show.
