Best reference book on dog breeds May 2, 2000 59 out of 60 found this review helpful
This is absolutely the best reference book on dog breeds I have ever seen. It is huge, containing over 900 pages. There is information on every dog breed. Even extinct breeds are included accompanied by drawings. There is a least one photograph of each dog breed shown in full-color on glossy stock. The more popular the breed, the more photos there are of it. Most are large and several are in full-page format. Information on each breed includes country of origin, registry, group, colors, height/weight, other names & coat description. A detailed history & their personality traits are also included. This is the book to get if you want a great way to learn about rare & seldom seen breeds. The unusual appearance of some the dogs is fascinating.
For dog lovers only! March 13, 2000 38 out of 39 found this review helpful
This impressive tome (about 14 pounds of book) is a delight for any dog lover. While some photographs are of questionable quality, the majority are stunning. Information on most breeds is interesting and accurate. I went through this book and fell in love with many breeds I had never seen or heard of before. Breeds from all over the world are represented here as well as a few that have sadly disappeared. I have often used it as a reference work when I heard of certain breeds. It helps to see and read a bit about them. It also is a reference to point out to friends what certain breeds look like and for them to get a little insight into the breed. A book this size would seem, however, to be an exhaustive reference work on the world's dog breeds. It is not. But that does not take away from it being a great addition to any dog lover's library.
Excellent ! February 2, 2000 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a great, great book. It gives information on lots of breeds (general info, of course). When anybody I know wants to get a dog, we always use this book for reference. This is what this book is, a great reference book. The photography is excellent. Everyone who likes dogs will enjoy reading this great book.
The dog book November 21, 1999 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book has a lot of information. I enjoyed this book because it has a page of information on each breed, it has information on breeds I did not know existed, and it has at least one photo per breed (uasally 3!)
I'm NOT impressed - poor quality photographs November 1, 1999 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
I was so very excited when i had ordered this book. I just couldn't wait to get my hands on it. And when it finally arrived, I was sooo amazed. It's such a larges book. Must be 6-7 cm thick, its looks are impressive. And the wording is good. I will use this book. BUT, and this is a major *BUT*: THE PICTURES ARE SOMETIMES REALLY BAD. I cant believe that they even choosed to print some of these really poor quality pictures. It's depressive that they didnt try to get more decent pictures, even to the 5th print!
