One of the best.... December 15, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Most useful and offers the novice about the more important aspects of every breed. This is the revised edition that includes more breeds than any other book I've seen and read--from Afghans to Zwergpinschers. It is also updated to provide the latest information in dog care. Each breed is discussed, from its character to its more ideal home environment. And as one would expect from Dorling-Kindersley (the publishing house), it has more than six hundred photos. A must for the dog lover.

I could not agree with the other five star reviews more. This is an excellent book. The photos and layout are superb, and the text is informative. The only negative about this book is the lack of pronunciations for medical words and dog breeds. I guess they had to save something for next time.
Good in Dog Care, Poor in Dog Breeds March 28, 2001 6 out of 28 found this review helpful
No doubt, Dr Bruce Fogle may be a good vet - BUT is he an experienced/proffesional dog trainer or behaviourist? NO! Simple theory. He features many rare breeds, and wrote profiles about them in this book. BUT ask yourself, do you think he had the chance to interact with these breeds in sufficient numbers to make judgements about them?I guess he is just took all this info (about the breeds) from some downright stupid book/website. Just read Paws to Consider written by America's Top Dog Trainers. They mentioned that Corgis were very smart and very trainable. Raising Rover written by a dog trainer/behaviourist mentioned that Corgis wanted to please and learn, and were good with kids too. PS: EVERYONE OUT THERE REMEMBER - HE'S A VET - NOT A DOG TRAINER OR BEHAVIOURIST WANNA BOOK ON DOG CARE AND HEALTH - GET HIS BOOK WANNA BOOK ON BREEDS - GET PAWS TO CONSIDER AND RAISING ROVER
Excellent Book! March 15, 2001 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book is excellent. You will not regret your purchase. I read this book everynight. If your interested in buying a dog and want to choose a breed, this book is perfect. Each dog has its own description and history by the author. There are also icons which represent aspects of each dog: A pitbull might have a child icon crossed out, meaning: "not suitable for children". Therefore, a husky might have a snowflake, building crossed out and a brush icon meaning: "good in the snow, not suitable for urban environment and requires much grooming". This book is exremely helpful, educational and entertaining. The pictures are amazingly vivid. The book layout, order and organization is excellent. Again, if you are interested in purchasing a dog, this book is PERFECT!! If you are interested in dog breeds, this book is PERFECT!! If you love good photography and tons of reading time, this book is PERFECT!! You wont regret buying this book..

It has beautiful pics of all kinds of dogs and tells many things about each specific breed, like weight, height, looks, grooming needs, good in cold hot or both, good with kids, ect. Along with all of that it also has origin of each breed, and skeletal structure of the over alldog. It has the origin of the dog and many things you don't even need/want to know!!! It is wonderful!!!
