After reading the entry on Australian Shepherds and reading the other reviews here, I think buyers should not pick a dog to purchase based on this book. The Australian Shepherd is listed as having a temperment like a Golden or a Retriever. I can only begin to tell you that this is not a typical or desired temperment for the Aussie. They have strong guardian instincts and are to be reserved with strangers.
Overall it may provide some basic information of many breeds but if you are looking for a pet, do some more research on the breed you are looking at.

I have this book and use it all the time because I read a lot of dog publications and talk to a lot of dog people. Whenever a breed is mentioned that I do not know I look it up in this book to see what it looks like. This book is very well suited to that purpose but much of its information about individual dog breeds is incorrect. It would be a bad idea to use this book to help choose which breed of dog is suited to you and your lifestyle and then purchase that breed. It doesn't give you a true and correct idea of what most of the breeds are like.
For example, despite the media's opinion, American Pit Bull Terriers are friendly, happy dogs that love kids and strangers. The book doesn't even give you an idea what the breed is really like and even dares to say it's not good with children. I know from owning Pit Bulls--that wern't abused or bred to be aggressive--that they put up with ANYTHING little kids do to them because they're patient, pain tollerant, forgiving, and playful enough to romp with them all day. If the author ever had read a book on Pit Bulls, he would know this.
And then, this really insulted me, in a picture of a Pit Bull it said that the ears are cropped (cut short in a triangle shape) in this breed to make the dog look dangerous. Cropping is done for the show ring or/and just because dog owners like the look of cropped ears and I am sure 95% of people who get their dogs ears croped do not do it so their dog will look like a vicious brute.
I can tell the author does not care for cropped ears because in many pictures in the encyclopedia that dysplay cropped dogs, the author makes a comment that says the cropping was done to make the dog look mean. I really feel as if he assumes most people crop to make their dogs look mean, which is not true. My personal opinion is cropping makes dogs look cute and pretty.
So what I'm saying is don't rely on the breed specific information this book gives you. Take it with a dose of salt. Be skeptic about it until you research it and verify it's correct. So just use this book to see the different breeds of dog as this book is probably the best visual resource on the market for that. I pull this book off the shelf just about every day, seriously. It does a very good job in pointing out visual traits that make a breed look like its breed.
Breed specific information aside, this book has a few chapters in the beginning that tell you a lot about dogs like how their bodies function, how they supposevly evolved from wolves, and lots of interesting dog facts like dogs in history. These chapters are very good and very intersting.

As dog encylopedias go, Dr. Fogle's is a good one with succinct text and good photos ... nice summations of each breed; however, found the information on the Eurasier breed to be inaccurate. First,the Eurasier comes from the offspring of a male chow and female keeshond,which was then bred with a samoyed. Dr. Fogle stated the breed comes from a chow, samoyed, wolfspitz mix. In fact, the wolfspitz was not part of the final mix. The keeshond/samoyed gives the Eurasier it's lovely,gentle temperment ... the only item from its chow heritage is the distinct black tongue and muzzle. Having researched this breed extensively and meeting with various owners, the comment "not a family dog .... snappy .... one-person" couldn't be farther from the truth. In all our research, every other book described this breed as gentle, social and family oriented ... they were right!

I have posted a review earlier, when I had not bought this book, but just looked at it, and, after having bought it and looked through it, it is far better than I expected.
With over 420 breeds and over 600 photographs, this book could make any dog-lover go mad! Excellent quality photos provide the reader with a very good idea of the size, weight and looks of each breed. Little, easy-to-read icons below the Facts provide the reader with information about the grooming, exercise and climatic needs of the dog, along with the temperament.
Short, but comprehensive, text provides the reader with an overview of the breed and the hunting and companion abilities.
Apart from all the various breeds, the whole structure and various characteristics of behaviour of dogs have also been explained. Dog food and dog products have also been printed and these would be of great help to new owners.
Buying a puppy is a big decision and, so, it has to be done carefully and this book is just right for it.
All in all, it's pretty amazing and I highly recommend it.

I have it and I love it. I refer to it four to six times a week for one reason or another. It has even settled some arguments reguarding dog facts.I have had it for about six months now and still use it frequently. It is definatly worth the money if you are really interested in learning about dogs. I would definatly recommend this book to any dog lover who wants to learn more about these wonderful and fascinating animals.
