The best dog encyclopedia August 25, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The new encyclopedia of the dog is a revised edition that is guaranteed to have some of the rarest breeds. I looked for a book about the Kooiker dog, a very rare breed and found it in the new encyclopedia of the dog. Anyone who likes dogs will enjoy looking through the full colour pictures of all the different breeds.
great for breed variety but text less informative August 18, 2002 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
This is overall an excellent book which includes about 500 different breeds, far more than other similar books I have seen. However, the texts are brief and not very informative. The symbols (which indicate a breed's temperament, grooming needs) are ambiguous at best. e.g. When there is no symbol indicating whether a dog needs room to run, does it mean the dog has no such need? Basically, one can get an idea of the size, look, origin, and original purpose of a breed from this book. For any information beyond a one-sentence summary, one must find another source.
One of THE Best Dog Encyclopedias May 10, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think this is one of the best, if not THE best dog encyclopedia. Not only does it have over 400 breeds in it (a lot even I don't know) but it has tons of pages designated to the history of the dog, dog activities, care, feeding, dog anatomy, temperment and so on. If you're looking for a breed 1 in 1,000 would know or 1,000 in 1,000 would know, this is the book. It is a wonderful book for both the novice and the expertice, and you will always find it useful. If you a looking for a dog encyclopedia, THIS IS THE ONE!

One of the best.... December 15, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Most useful and offers the novice about the more important aspects of every breed. This is the revised edition that includes more breeds than any other book I've seen and read--from Afghans to Zwergpinschers. It is also updated to provide the latest information in dog care. Each breed is discussed, from its character to its more ideal home environment. And as one would expect from Dorling-Kindersley (the publishing house), it has more than six hundred photos. A must for the dog lover.
