5 out of 5 stars Bow-Wow Wonderful   May 25, 2007

One of the best canine reference books I have ever read. The photography is beautiful and unlike many such books, we are treated to photos of both adult and puppy of the breed. Book also contains an excellent health section on the anatomy of the dog and provides an outstanding aid in making preliminary home diagnoses which provide useful information for the vet. Photos also show the dogs in various habitats. Book is a delight for dog lovers of all ages. I purchased the book for my wife who is trying to decide on the best choice for her next dog and our granddaughters love it as well. We usually wind up getting mutts, and most often from the ASPCA, but this book tells us what characteristics we can expect in mixed breeds. Outstanding book.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite Reference   March 26, 2007
I understand the complaints of lack of detail on each breed. For those of us who have owned dogs for many a year this book is a great over-view - well put together and informative when choosing our next companion. Though it lacks full detail on each breed, its breadth (not just in number of breeds but in history, care, physiology, and why such an animal has this specific set of needs) far outweighs the detail. This book is a great starting point - upon finding a breed that you think will suit you, then research it further by perhaps finding a breed specific book or reading up online.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent buy for any dog fancier   September 27, 2006

Unlike most books that only cover AKC or UKC dog breeds, this book is set apart by the fact that it has nearly 500 breeds listed from all different registries, including many breeds unknown to the general public.

This book is an excellent starting point to get familiar with various dog breeds, but it does not offer much detailed information. Many of the dogs get only a few short paragraphs about temperament or special concerns. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in knowing more about all the different dog breeds, but I would not reccomend it to a person looking for specific information on only one or two breeds.

The only thing that irks me about this book is in the back section they have a few "designer breeds", also known as fancy mutts -like labradoodles, cockapoos etc. Do not be fooled- these animals are not recognized by any registry, and the people who breed them have no standards to go by, so things like temperament, health testing, working ability and titles can not be completed beyond basic CGC or basic regular training. These designer dogs are also commonly sold for hundreds to thousands of dollars, with no health guarantee, when you could find the same mutt in a shelter. Please do not support the backyard breeders or puppy millers that pump out these mutts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Variety of Dogs   July 14, 2006

This is an excellent book that touches on a huge variety of breeds. While some books show "recognized" breeds, this book shows breeds in the making such as the Labradoodle, and obscure, yet excellent breeds such as the Danish/Sweedish Farm Dog. I love the informatin and the pictures and it is a great reference book for the family and dog enthusiasts alike.
