Only OK--just a formula June 29, 2004 3 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book is a cookie cutter type of book where they insert the word "dachshund" where ever the breed of dog is supposed to go. It's about 95% general dog information and about 5% dachshund breed specific. (It's probably not just dachshunds, either, but for dogs that are "earth dogs"--meaning digging type of dogs, be they dachshunds, beagles, terriers, etc.) It's about what you would expect from a "Something for Everyone" Dummies book.
A must have for every dachshund owner October 10, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is wonderful for the first time owner of dachshunds. Very informative, easy to understand and fun to read. The writers are very delightful in their description of the unique personality of the playful, vivacious and often mischievious dachshund.
Must Buy October 28, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is an awesome book, you can tell that the writer has a lot of experience with this breed. It discusses all options of anything mentioned (mini vs. standard, natural care vs. traditional, rescue vs. breeder etc.) and if you buy nothing else, buy this book. It has information on everything from training to choosing your puppy and all of it is specific.
The only Dachshund book you'll ever need October 6, 2002 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Until I bought this book, I didn't realize that taking care of my new Dachshund wasn't just like taking care of any other dog. This book tells you all the unique and individual things you need to know to keep your Dachshund healthy, happy, and to train him, plus it's got a lot of great general dog information, too. This is the only Dachshund book you'll ever need!
Buyer Beware! August 25, 2002 34 out of 38 found this review helpful
There are several inaccuracies in this book, pertaining to genetic defects and a few pictures. But one in particular is DANGEROUS. Please beware, the author recommends feeding grapes as a treat to your dog. The ASPCA has issued a warning regarding grapes (and raisins). In part: "In response to reports of dogs developing kidney failure after eating large amounts of grapes or raisins, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) conducted a review of all related cases in its database. Veterinary toxicologists found that all of the companion canines developed vomiting within six hours of ingestion; the estimated amounts of grapes or raisins eaten ranged from nine ounces to two pounds. Other commonly reported signs included diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy and abdominal pain, and all of the dogs developed evidence of kidney disfunction. Adds APCC's Charlotte Means, DVM, "Whether the ingested grapes were purchased fresh from grocery stores or grown in private yards didn't seem to matter, nor did the brand eaten." Clinical signs lasted for several days--sometimes even weeks. And after aggressive treatment, which included intravenous fluids and medications, half of the dogs recovered, while the others died or had to be euthanized." Visit the ASPCA website for more info. Please do not feed grapes or raisins to your dog.
