My best read of 2007! January 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I simply loved this book. Basically, it is a man and his dog story, but what was special to me was how Kerasote "spoke" for his dog. He tells tale after tale about Merle, inserting the words for Merle's part of the exchanges. If you have ever loved a dog, you will relate to his thoughtful storytelling. Kerasote is an intelligent writer and adds a lot of interesting and fascinating information about canines beyond the stories in the timeline of this part of his life. I have given several copies of this book away as gifts, because I wanted to share the fun I had in reading this gem!!
Beautiful and touching January 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a wonderful book! Having lost my beloved 14-year-old Golden Retriever to cancer two months ago, I was touched and comforted by the author`s story of his loving relationship with his exceptional dog. A must-read for dog lovers. By the way, if you go to Ted Kerasote`s website, you`ll see a collection of photographs of Merle he took over the years. My favourite is of Merle sliding down a slope in deep powder snow, looking like the happiest dog in the world.
Best dog story ever written January 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Merle's Door is very well written and is a marvelous story of the author and his love of his dog. Very readablely the author has intertwined research on dog/wolf behavior and documented the research sources.
Amazing story about the love of dogs and nature January 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not only was Merle an incredible dog, but his person was an incredible human. They are lucky to have found one another.
There are those who would say that there is too much projection about animal thoughts and feelings in this book, that it isn't healthy to anthropamorphize an animal to such an extent. Even as a huge lover of dogs, and one who has always been interested in their inner life, there were a few moments that I thought were self-indulgent. But so what!
This is a beautiful tale that shows the impact that animals can have on our lives, how they can enrich our connection with nature and allow us to learn to love and be better people than we would be without them. Of course first we must love them in a way that respects their inherent dignity, and attempts to understand and honor their animal selves so that we can truly share this spiritual communion across species. Ted has certainly done that and along the way has helped us understand how we can all do better in relation to our animal friends.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough and will be giving it to a number of friends who share similarly rich and complex relationships with their dog companions.
Wonderful. Absolutely "The Best" January 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, I'm going to admit up front I'm dog obsessed. I thought this was the best book I have read. And, Yes, I've read Marley and Me, From Bagdad with Love, etc. Merle's Door is simply better. Maybe because it's so personal or just so powerfully written. Put me with the reviewers who said "WOW". As do others, I envy the life Ted had with this dog. All that said, the story teaches, yet it's extremely moving. The writing is so good, I felt a personal connection to Ted Kerosote as well as Merle. For anyone who loves dogs, it's an absolute "must read". For those who love life in the outdoors, you won't want to miss it either. Many thanks to Ted Kerasote for writing such a wonderful book. What a joy! If you love Golden Retrievers, there's something special for you too.
