A keeper and an eye-opener for dog lovers December 3, 2005 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful story - with ups and downs, twists and turns. John Grogran shares his innocent assumptions that often turn into true misunderstandings about Marley the Lab. All done out of love ... The sharing of these intimate moments provides wonderful insights to dog lovers everywhere - a true understanding of what we often project into our dogs - as we love them. You cannot help but love Marley through the pages ...and appreciate the love Grogan and his wife show to a "handful" of a dog. I do wish that had had better dog training advice along the way but the book remains a true gem! Kate Nicoll, MSW author of Soul Friends : Finding Healing with Animals
A book that touches your heart December 3, 2005 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I found this book by accident in the bookstore and bought it to read because the dog on the cover looked so much like my beloved Kelly. This book is for anyone who has ever had the privilege to own a dog. Marley isn't really bad he's just a happy lovable dog. We can all associate if we've owned a lab. Even if you haven't everyone will find a little of Marley that will remind them of their dog. I laughed so hard - my chocolate lab Jake is so much like Morley. As George Carlin said when you get a puppy you know it is not going to have a good ending, it's a tragedy in the making. We lost my Kelly to diabetes and the last 30 pages of the book were heartbreaking. I had trouble seeing the print because I was crying so hard. This is a book that will bring you joy and sorrow - but it is definitely worth the trip.
This is one story forever etched in my heart... December 1, 2005 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
What a wonderful heartwarming story about the life and love of a dog! Anyone who has ever loved a dog through it's life will relate to this story. I just lost my best friend this year and this story couldn't have fallen into my hands at a better time. I laughed with the Grogan's throughout Marley's life, grieved when they did, felt the immense pride and joy when they did - it was truly amazing how John Grogan was able to reel in my emotions and make me live my days in his life. "Is it possible for dogs to teach us humans who are smarter, more sophisticated about the things that really matter in life?" "Loyalty. Courage. Devotion. Simplicity. Joy..." "A dog judges others not by their color or creed or class, but by who they are inside. A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his." He fully embraces our relationships with our canine counterparts.
Not a friend of the working class man. . . November 30, 2005 50 out of 91 found this review helpful
I enjoy this book, and could really identify with the author's struggles, since I own a lab myself.
But Grogan manages to alienate me with his mean-spirited comments about. . . people different from him.
Here's what he says about the neighborhood he lived in in FL:
"It began to take on a gritty edge as the original homeowners died off and were replaced by a motley group of renters and working class families."
Mr. Grogan--what is "motley" and "gritty" about working class families? Or people that rent? Not everyone can be a young professional like you.
He spends several pages ridiculing the people of Boca Raton, although he ends up moving there himself.
So I guess I liked the book but did not like the author.
A Dog Lover's Delight November 27, 2005 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
I stumbled upon this book in the bookstore and was hesitant in buying it. Afterall, what kind of book is this for a mid 40's sports junkie? I've got to tell you, Marley & Me is exactly what I needed. It's about an adventure with mans best friend -- his dog and the development of life itself. From getting married, to choosing a puppy, to having kids, to career changes to watching your "best friend" get old. Marley & Me touches on all of this with the dog being the subject. Marley & Me is a fun and fast reading novel. It is easy to read and expertly captures the emotions of the dog owners. If you looking for some light reading reading this holiday season and a book guaranteed to put a smile on your face and possibly a tear in your eye -- then read Marley & Me. It surely makes me appreciate my two cocker spaniels that much more.
