Great ideas found here November 11, 2008 This book has some good advice on everything from customizing the fit to how to put a sweater on a dog. It includes some basic considerations such as does your dog need a sweater and advice on which yarn to use. The patterns offer a variety of styles (patterns by different designers) and are pretty easy to follow. A chapter is included that offers patterns for items for people that match the dog sweaters (for example a fair isle hat that matches a fair isle dog sweater). It also has a chapter on accessories for dogs which includes a dog bed, 3 toys, a herbal alternative flea collar, a "walk in the park" bag, doggy saddlebag, and doggy legwarmers. A section of resources gives websites for yarn sources, squeakers, and knitting help. A short bibliography of general knitting books is also included. Similar toStylish Knits for Dogs: 36 Projects to Knit in a Weekendbut without the basic how to knit section. I like the everyday sweaters and patterns for toys in Knitting for Dogs better.
Great Book for the avid knitter/doglover May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the best knitting books for dogs out there. The patterns are fun, easy to read, and very easy to modify for that perfect fit. I also love the fact that there is a section on toys/accessories, and even a small selection of human accessories to match with doggie outfits! Great book, highly recommended.
Not just sweaters November 22, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I own at least 8 dog knits books, and this one is by far my favorite. Not only are there sweaters, but toys, ponchos, and fun accessories.
Contrary to what other reviewers have said, while most of the designs are appropriate for smaller dogs--the patterns are sized for multiple sizes and some can be easily adjusted up.
The only reason this book did not get 5 stars is because Porter uses high-end, expensive yarns which are not practical for everyday wear OR if you want to make many projects. For example, the local knitting shop owner told me that a woman custom ordered the yarns for the cover project--her dog was lab sized--and the total was almost $200.

I prefer crochet, but this book made knitting patterns more simple than I remember, and the patterns are cute.
This was the book that inspired me to finally make a sweater February 13, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Make a sweater for my dog - that is. I have been to lovely, charming and funky dog boutiques - I look at the prices for the sweaters and other dog attire. Trust me, I have bought one truly cute sweater and only because it was on sale! So,first off, the specialty dog boutique prices alone helped drive me to seek out knitting books for dog sweaters. And, a very big second motivating factor was the quality of what was offered in the specialty dog boutiques were not anything better than what I could make once I set my mind to it! After a bit of browsing, I saw this book online, and later on I went to a local book store to look at the book in person to make sure I would like the patterns as well as see the various skill levels available - the price online is still far better. This is an excellent book for a knitter of any skill level. I have only made one sweater out of this book but to me it was worth it many times over because my dog LOVED the sweater! My dog still enjoys wearing the sweater. I am still a newer knitter and I think if you have any level of knitting skill at all that any pattern in this book can be adapted for a custom-fit and custom-design sweater for your dog and their personality. Recently, I was on a trip and stopped in the Dog Boutiques - so once again, I have been inspired to get this book out!
