it really solves your problems July 19, 2008 Thank you Tracy for leaving us your wisdom through these pages. It's amazing how you make us think on the right & wrong things we've been doing as parents & how to fix these mistakes.
Confusing and mean-spirited June 26, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are many problems with this book but I am going to go into two of them -- it is confusing and mean.
This is not a book that can be read from cover to cover. She starts off with descriptions of how wonderful her methods are and makes specific but vague references to the ideas with notes that you will have to turn to a certain page to understand the theory. When you turn to that page you are greeted with references that don't make sense because you are in the middle of a different chapter. She spends too much time telling you how fantastic her singular technique for child raising is, and very little time describing that technique.
The most significant problem that I had with this book is that it was MEAN! She goes on and on about people who are struggling with raising their children and then mocks them. She spends 2/3 of her time with "pitiful" cases and then briefly describes why these parents are lazy and stupid. I am not exaggerating -- she uses the word lazy in her book. She also has a limited repertoire of techniques -- basically one. If you don't parent her way you are belittled and ridiculed. My infant son is not out of control but I like to explore my options, get different ideas about how to comfort him and what to expect. This source always left me disappointed and crying. She made me not trust my instincts and not listen to what my child was telling me he needed. I ended up throwing away this book because every single time I opened it I was sorry that I did.
This book changed my life! June 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A friend loaned me this book and then I bought all of Tracy Hogg's books! The Baby Whisperer is a fabulous, helpful, insightful set of books that changed me from a clueless first-time mommy to a routined, experienced mommy, and I even have time for myself. I recommend this book to every mom, new or seasoned.
This book + common sense = a great sigh of relief June 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a pediatric nurse and a brand new mommy. With my clinical back ground, I could advise many parents on how to care for their newborns; however, when I became a mom I was thrown in the reality that you really truly can't parent " by the book"...I spent a lot of my baby's first months struggling with the " do's" and "don't's" I'd pushed on parents as a nurse because it's " what is recommended". I felt like a complete idiot because I couldn't respond to my baby and get the results I thought I should yield. I needed some gentle guidelines. I headed to the library and started grabbing parenting books. This was the last one I picked up and the first one I read. I simply cannot tell you the relief I felt as I read this book. While I do not agree with every last detail of the book, It was just what I needed to calm my fears .
Now you must know that NO author, nanny, pediatrician or nurse can give generic guidelines that will work for every baby! So if you go about buying parenting books expecting them to fix your every problem, you will be disappointed with ANY book. However, if you can read the book and allow it to give you a little background information, encouragement and lay down some basic guidelines all while using your common sense, I think you'll get a lot from this book. Obviously, if you read the book and think " this will never work for my child", put the book down and keep searching! All babies are different.
I was having a hard time keeping my baby on a routine and at 3 months I knew she needed some sort of consistency. After reading the book, I changed my expectations and went at the plans detailed in with an open mind. In the first day my daughter went from being fussy, hard to put down for a nap and very difficult to feed, to a happy, playful little girl. I didn't realize that my baby was beyond tired and over stimulated. This book teaches that a baby's eating, playing and sleeping are all interrelated and if one area is struggling, all will be effected.
I am sorry that others have been disappointed by the book. I am very thankful to Tracy Hogg for sharing her expertise.
Recommended reading May 30, 2008 My sister was given the original "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" book to read as part of her nursing curriculum in college. I read a couple years ago at her recommendation and thought it was a great guide.
If you've read the other one, then you'll love this book. It is more of a troubleshooting book than the first one. It has sample routines and charts to use.
I'm in my 5th month and feel confident that anything I face in the first few months can be managed better with the guidance from this book.
If you haven't read the other book first, you can still use this one. She explains everything again, you may just have to be patient while she does.
