This Really Works for You and Your Dog(s) July 18, 2002 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
We have followed every lesson in this book and it really works! I'm lucky to be living in VA and have been able to work with Miriam personally to train myself and my Husky/Hound puppies. They are all male and from the same litter. What could have been a nightmare situation has worked out very well. They get along and thanks to the training lessons in this book, I feel comfortable taking them anywhere. Miriam gives clear, concise information that works in real life. We have our last class in advanced off-lead training next week and have done the brace training she discusses in some of her other books.I highly recommend using the "Comfort Trainer" head halter she designed. I would also recommend getting her book on training with a head halter. It's the most intelligent and humane way to train a dog. This book was written by an extremely knowledgeable writer and has been proven over and over again with many happy dogs and their owners. See her web site at ...
Phenomenal Training Tactics! April 11, 1999 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am the owner of an 80# rambunctious 2 year old Lab mix. We've been through numerous types of trainings, and I have to say the exercises in this book have been the only ones that have worked repeatedly so far. I've also started using the halti with my dog and found it to be an unbelievable tool--especially since it is so humane and doesn't harm the dog whatsoever, unlike other methods that other trainers use. I loved the fact that Ms. Fields-Babineau uses positive reinforcement for all training. And she does it using love, and not the type where you have to give your dog treats for everything they do. I highly recommend this book for any dog, regardless of how old they are. As for the reviewer from Starkville, MS-you don't know the first thing about dog training if you believe this is animal cruelty!
Excellent novice book October 5, 1998 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ms. Fields-Babineau has done an excellent job of explaining the basics of dog training. If you are looking for a book showing the novice trainer where to begin and how to proceed, you would do well with this book. The training techniques are outlined in an easy to follow manner which enables anyone to follow them with ease. This book has been very helpful in solving some of the problem areas I have had with my dog, even though he is beyond the basics of training. I would recommend this book to all those looking for a simple, understandable, easy to follow guide to training their dog.
Great book for novice dog trainers August 23, 1998 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
As the owner of a very hyper 3 year old dog, I found this book to be very informative. Ms. Fields-Babineau explains all steps in an easy to follow manner which will give the trainer and the dog confidence as they build their relationship. This is a great book for anyone looking to make their dog a part of their family, not just a pet. If these training methods are followed, an owner will assit their dog to grow into a confident, well mannered, and well behaved part of the family. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy to follow, confidence building training experience.
Excellent basic book July 11, 1998 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
We have two very energetic Australian Shepards. This book was an excellent choice for home training. We follwed the instructions and procedures. The results were wonderful. It is a pleasure to walk with our dogs now. The recomendation of the Halti collar helped greatly. The methods suggested are all positive reenforcement using praise and love. I have recomended this book and the halti collar to our friends. The use of the knee to stop the dogs from jumping was completly misunderstood by the previous review. I quote from the book "For dogs that are insensitive to the aural reprimand-or if you simply do not have your pennycan with you-then you must either push off or knock your dog down as he jumps up. Do this with your knee in his chest on his way up or with your hand if he is already on you. Always say "NO!" when pushing him off." A simply method in which you are placing your knee in the dogs way not kneeing him as you may think. I highly recommend this book for the information, methods, and equipment it suggests.
