Product Description
Heres a fascinating miscellany of dog-related facts, figures, information, and humor, combined with solid, practical information for dog owners on general care and training of their pet. Readers will find stories about dogs who accompanied soldiers on battlefields and still other canines who assisted rescue workers at disaster sites. Here too are suggestions for all kinds of activities readers can enjoy with their dogs, as well as jokes and cartoons about dogs, advice on how to read a dogs body language, notes on the origins of breed names, and much more. Dog Biz is strong on entertainment content, emphasizing the fun that is part of dog ownership. The book is whimsical, as well, with items that include a look at the coolest in canine fashions and thoughts on the art of making a personalized doggy birthday card. This highly entertaining book is packed with 400 color photos, drawings, and cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars A little bit of doggy in my life...   May 26, 2008

"Dog Biz: A Compendium of Amazing Facts and Anecdotes from the Dog World" is a nifty, handy little book that provides a little of this and that about dogs. If you are thinking of getting a dog, get this little book first because it provides so much background and information about dogs.

Compendium: 1. a brief summary of a larger field of work, 1. an abstract.
"A brief summary" of the world of the dog is exactly what you get here. Allow me to show you. The Table of Contents starts with the history of the dog, his individual parts and their precise use, the specific types of dogs (scenthounds, running dogs, toy breeds, and so on).

Section 2 involves the things dogs do, such as go to sea, live in the White House as the presidential pet, sniff out drugs, go on television with their tricks, and just be loyal pets, among many deeds. Section 3 is how we see dogs: Superstitions, legends, heraldy, as gods, actors and in art.

Section 4 shows us dogs and people together: fashion, bad dogs, collectibles, naming one's dog, a doggy dictionary, to name a few.

The photography is striking, sometimes with dog cut-outs set against black backgrounds. For every two-page topic, at least four photographs and other visuals are used, making a very eye-pleasing set of pages. For example, for Breed Fact File (36-37), there are two photos, one illustration, and one chart. (The chart differentiates breeding terms: breed, pure-bred, crossbred, mongrel, and pedigree). Do you know that the Australian Shepherd is really an American-bred dog? Or that the Great Dane is really from Germany? There are several of these misnomers.

This is a delightful book with a little bit of every conceivable topic pertaining to dogs. It would make a great first book for children (ages 8 and up) who want dogs or have just acquired a dog. Of course, adults may buy and apply!
