Saddle up! December 14, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Michaela Bancroft's life is quite busy taking care of her horses, her best friend, and her family during the sticky divorce proceedings she is going through with her cheating husband. So when her Uncle Lou misses their breakfast date, Michaela goes to his ranch to find out why. When she sees the stabled horses in distress, she investigates, and finds the body of her beloved uncle dead with a pitchfork in his back.
Michaela, or Mick for short, stumbles upon her uncle's murdered corpse, and immediately begins suspecting everyone close to her by way of work or family. Was it Lou's much younger wife Cynthia, who has a used pregnancy test in her bathroom? Or was it Mick's father whose gambling addiction has once again become a problem? The local vet, Ethan, considered Lou his substitute father, but there had recently been a falling out in their relationship - but he won't explain it to Michaela, which brings doubts to her of her lifelong friend.
When suspicious accidents seem to follow Michaela, she suspects that her inquisitiveness has made someone nervous - especially when another body is discovered. Will she ever find her uncle's killer? Or will she end up destitute from medical bills that her husband won't pony up the money to help pay? And who is running the breeding scam causing multiple lawsuits against her uncle's estate?
This is a great cozy for animal lovers, and readers don't need to know a lot of the horse riding/ranching lingo to understand the story. Michaela is an engaging character with a variety of eccentric co-stars. The storyline was quick moving and intricate but interesting and not difficult to follow. I enjoyed this first installment in Scott's new series, and I look forward to another Michaela Bancroft horse lover's mystery.
What do horses have to do with it? November 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The horses in this book are just window dressing, which was disappointing. Early on, the author makes a big deal out of the heroine's young stud colt, and then the horse isn't mentioned again. The heroine also feeds dry bran to said stud colt after he colics - on her vet's advice. If you are not a horseperson, then I'm not going to explain the absolute stupidity of doing something like that, trust me, no one running a breeding/training facility would be that ignorant. That said, the plot was OK, but real horse knowledge seems to be lacking on the author's part. Maybe she should stick to wine-themed mysteries?
Not Much Ado About Horses September 22, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I expected a good read with a lot of horse stuff thrown in, but was disappointed. I felt the characters weren't properly introduced either--characterization was needed before the poorly written plot. There has to be better mystery horse stories out there--this isn't one of them.
Strong Debut to a New Series September 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a fan of the Wine Lover's series by Michele Scott, so I decided to give this series a try. I was not disappointed to say the least. I thought that the characters were well rounded and their actions reflected what one may do if their reality was a mystery novel. I find that I enjoy her writing style and I have yet to figure out one of her mysteries before the protaganist does. I recommend this series. You don't have to be a horse lover or even familiar with horses, horse breeding and training to enjoy this book.
Not my style May 15, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This author was recommended to me, and I've now tried both of her series, and didn't like either one. In both cases, I really didn't like the attitude, or mindset, perhaps, of the main character. I couldn't get past a few chapters in either this or the wine series. For comparison, my favorite mystery authors right now are Janet Evanovich, Earlene Fowler, Ayelet Waldman, Sarah Graves, Laura Durham, Kate White, Kate Collins and Carolyn Haines.
